Here is my current recording chain for YouTube narration:

I have tried several different preamp and channel strip sounds.
For my narration voice, I have found that Manley VOXBOX and SSL-style channel strips work quite well.
Recently, I often use an SSL-style channel strip for YouTube narration.
The SSL sound helps the voice feel more direct and present. It can make narration easier to place in front of background music and video sound.
For singing, I often prefer Neve-style preamps because they can add a sense of thickness and musical warmth.
But for spoken narration, I sometimes prefer the cleaner and more forward character of an SSL-style channel strip.
This is not a universal rule.
The best preamp or plug-in depends on your voice, microphone, room, speaking style, and final video style.
For my voice, SSL-style processing often makes narration easier to understand while still keeping enough warmth.
Using the SM7B with Apollo Twin: Gain Is the Main Issue
The biggest thing to understand about the SM7B is gain.
The SM7B has a relatively low output level. This means you need a good amount of clean gain from your audio interface or microphone preamp.
Apollo Twin can be used with the SM7B, but in my setup, I felt that I needed to raise the gain quite a lot to reach a comfortable recording level.
Of course, it is possible to record this way.
However, I did not always want to push the mic preamp too hard. I also wanted to keep my gain staging more comfortable and consistent.
That is why I added an inline preamp.
Why I Use the sE Electronics DM1 Dynamite

To help with the gain issue, I use the sE Electronics DM1 Dynamite.
The DM1 Dynamite is an inline microphone preamp. It sits between the microphone and the audio interface and adds extra clean gain.
This makes the SM7B much easier to use.
The important point is that the SM7B itself does not require phantom power because it is a dynamic microphone.
However, the DM1 Dynamite does require phantom power from the audio interface.
So the signal chain works like this:
SM7B → DM1 Dynamite → Apollo Twin → Logic Pro
The microphone itself is passive, but the inline preamp needs power.
This can be confusing at first, but once the setup is connected correctly, it is simple to use.
After adding the DM1 Dynamite, I no longer needed to push the Apollo Twin gain as hard. In my environment, I often use around the 5-mark area on the gain setting, though the exact level depends on voice volume, mic distance, and the preamp settings.
The DM1 Dynamite made my SM7B setup feel more practical.
For anyone using an SM7B with an audio interface, I think an inline preamp is worth considering.
Recording in Logic Pro
I record my narration in Logic Pro.
When recording voiceover, I try to keep the input level safe. I usually aim for peaks around -10 to -6 dBFS.
I do not try to record as loud as possible.
If the recording clips, it is very difficult to fix later. For narration, it is better to leave some headroom and adjust the volume after recording.
My processing in Logic Pro is quite simple.
The main tools I use are:
- EQ
- compressor
I do not want to over-process my voice. My goal is not to create an exaggerated radio voice. I want the narration to sound natural, warm, and easy to listen to.
EQ: Cleaning Up the Low End Without Losing Warmth
For EQ, I often use FabFilter Pro-Q.
As a bass singer, my speaking voice naturally has a lot of low-frequency energy.
That can be a strength.
A low voice can sound calm, warm, and authoritative.
However, too much low end can make narration muddy. It can also make words harder to understand, especially when the voice is mixed with music or ambient sound in a YouTube video.
So I use EQ to clean up unnecessary low frequencies.
The goal is not to make the voice thin.
The goal is to keep the warmth while removing the parts that make the narration unclear.
I also listen for any harsh or uncomfortable frequencies.
If the “s” sounds are too sharp, I may reduce the sibilant area slightly. But I try not to cut too much, because clarity is important for speech.

Compression: Using an LA-2A Style Compressor
After EQ, I usually use an LA-2A style compressor.
For my voice, this kind of compressor works well for narration.
I use it gently.
The purpose is not to crush the voice. The purpose is to smooth out the volume differences and make the narration easier to hear.
In YouTube videos, narration often needs to sit above music, environmental sound, or B-roll audio.
If the voice level changes too much, the viewer may have trouble following the story.

I like LA-2A style compression because it can feel smooth and natural. It does not make my voice sound too aggressive when used carefully.

Why I Stopped Relying on iZotope VEA

In the past, I used iZotope VEA for my YouTube narration.
VEA is a very convenient voice enhancement plug-in. It can help shape a spoken voice quickly with only a few controls.
When I first started using it, I liked how easily it made my narration sound more polished.
However, after using it for a while, I began to feel that it added a little too much character to my voice.
For some voices and some content styles, that may be perfect.
But for my bass voice, I sometimes felt the sound became slightly too forward or too aggressive.
I want my narration to remain warm and natural.
That is why I now prefer a simpler approach: EQ and compression.
This does not mean VEA is bad.
For beginners, podcasters, streamers, or creators who want to improve their voice quickly, it can be a very useful plug-in.
But for my current YouTube narration style, I prefer more manual control.

How Much Should You Process YouTube Voiceover Audio?

The most important things are:

- the volume is stable
- the words are easy to understand
- the voice feels natural
For individual creators, it is not always realistic to create a perfect studio environment.
If you spend too much time trying to make every recording perfect, it can slow down the entire video production process.
For me, consistency is more important than perfection.
I want my narration to sound good, but I also want the setup to be simple enough that I can keep making videos.
That balance is very important.
My Basic YouTube Voiceover Workflow
Here is my usual workflow:
- Turn on the Apollo Twin
- Open Logic Pro
- Check the SM7B position
- Set the input level
- Record the narration

This workflow is simple.
That is the point.
If the recording process becomes too complicated, I am less likely to record consistently.

However, if you want a setup that can grow with you and you are serious about recording quality, this kind of chain can be very useful.
The most important thing is to understand the role of each part:

- The DM1 Dynamite adds clean gain
- The Apollo Twin converts and processes the audio

Recommended Setup for a Warm Low Male Voice
For a low male voice or bass voice, I would recommend focusing on clarity rather than just adding more bass.
A low voice already has weight.
If you add too much low end, the narration can become unclear.
For a warm but clear low voice, I recommend:
- using the SM7B fairly close to the mouth
- avoiding excessive low-frequency boost
- reducing unnecessary rumble
- using gentle compression
- keeping the voice natural
- checking the sound with background music
